Sweet, Salty, Sour, Bitter

One of the many side-effects and problems that my illness causes, is the gradual loss of the sense of taste. Now as far as I am concerned, this ability still works very well. Anyhow sometimes my sense of taste does not give a true indication. It is sometimes too weak and other times exaggerated. For instance coffee is at times tasteless or on the other hand its taste is too strong, almost burnt.

When I feel the sense of taste diminishing, I fear it is getting ready to disappear forever and this would be like receiving a great blow to my head. As I like to enjoy my food and I like to taste all sorts of new flavors, the loss of taste would mean losing the taste for life itself and it would be really very difficult to accept. Food is and always has been a very important part of my life.

To prevent such an event taking place I invented an infallible method to safeguard this important sense. It is a method that has been put to the test again and again many times and always proved correct.

It consists of enjoying the taste several times a day and every day. I am referring to my favorite foods. In order not to forget the flavors of different kinds of tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter I actually exercise my pallet. Now I will try to explain how I go about doing this.

After lunch and after dinner I like to eat sweet things. I see no good reason why I should give them up like everybody says I should do. If I notice that the flavor is fading away, I put into action my strategy. For example I would take another helping of delicious cake, just to remind myself what it tastes like. If it is not enough I repeat the operation until I am sure that I am satisfied with the flavor and for that day I will remember what chocolate cake tastes like. I need to keep the memories of the different flavors alive, so I dedicate much time and effort to this important job.

The same applies to peppermint sweets. I need to reinforce their flavor and if I eat five or six mints it’s sure that this flavor remains strongly
impressed in my mind and I won’t forget it for that day.

This method has one unfortunate side effect. It makes you gain weight and you could get fat fast, because of the numerous tests one has to do. Luckily I have devised an excellent solution. I use my exercise bicycle to burn up excess calories and with great satisfaction I sometimes lose weight by pedaling half an hour each day.

Applying my taste method continuously one gains well being not only from a physical point of view but also from a mental one.

  1. Your method sounds good to me but like you said it’s rather bad for them fatrolls that develop. That’s why we go on so many bicycle rides because I too have a very sweet tooth and the bad thing is I don’t just reserve the eating of sweet stuff after a meal…….
